Basically, the story is about Madame Emma Bovary, a young doctor's wife living with her husband Charles in Rouen. Emma first met Charles at age 13 but did not get married until she was 18. She has passions and romantic notions and she is unhappy with her boring married life. These romantic notions drive her to start an affair, accumulate debts, entangle herself in lies, and, in the end, commit suicide. Most likely, her young age and getting married very young could have contributed to the failure of her life which also might have been what Flaubert was trying to portray in his novel.
