The Mysterious Story of Madame Bovary
Introduction to Author Gustave Flaubert
Gustave Flaubert, photo listed below, is the writer of the story of Madame Bovary. The novel takes place in 1857 Tostes, Yonville-l'Abbaye, and Rouen, France. Basically, the story is about Madame Emma Bovary, a young doctor's wife living with her husband Charles in Rouen. Emma first met Charles at age 13 but did not get married until she was 18. She has passions and romantic notions and she is unhappy with her boring married life. These romantic notions drive her to start an affair, accumulate debts, entangle herself in lies, and, in the end, commit suicide. Most likely, her young age and getting married very young could have contributed to the failure of her life which also might have been what Flaubert was trying to portray in his novel.

According to study.com, Madame Bovary is inspired by a true story. "The name of the woman who inspired Emma's character was Veronique Delphine Delamare. She was married to a doctor and had several lovers. She died at the age of 26, leaving behind numerous debts and a 6-year-old daughter."
Flaubert's Madame Bovary is a study of human stupidity and the "romantic malady." The story depicts the despair and unhappiness faced by those who are unwilling or unable to resolve the conflicts between their dreams and idealized aspirations and the real world. This would be called a study of neurosis in modern terms.
According to Wikipedia Flaubert's novel Madame Bovary was attacked by French prosecutors for obscenity but the novel survived this attack to this day. The novel has even been called "a perfect work of fiction." The novel is also called a "seminal work of literary realism, the novel is now considered Flaubert's masterpiece, and one of the most influential literary works in history."

Movies about Madame Bovary
There have been 2 movies produced on the story of Madame Bovary. The 1949 version of Madame Bovary is an American romantic drama, "a film adaptation of the classic 1857 novel" by Gustave Flaubert. The 2013 version of Madame Bovary "began on 30 September 2013 in Normandy. Joe Neurauter and Felipe Marino of Occupant Entertainment produced the film in association with director Sophie Barthes' production company Aden Films and Jaime Mateus-Tique from Aleph Motion Pictures." I give the 2013 version of the movie Madame Bovary 5 stars ***** out of 5.
Background of Gustave Flaubert:
Gustave Flaubert was born on December 12, 1821 in Rouen, France. He died on May 8, 1880, in Croisset, Canteleu, France. His writings were influenced by writers Honore de Balzac, Victor Hugo, and others. His writings influenced Guy de Maupassant, Emile Zola, Charles Baudelaire, and others. Gustave had 5 siblings Josefine Caroline, Achille, Caroline, Jules-Alfred, and Emile Cleophas. His parents were Achilles-Cleophas and Anne Justine Caroline Flaubert.
Conclusion about the Movie Madame Bovary:
Gustave Flaubert seemed to intentionally name his novel Madame Bovary because Bovary rhymes with ovary which is obviously a feminine feature. Emma Bovary is a young wife, 18 years old, married to a doctor in the small town of Rouen in France, and she is unhappy and bored. Teenagers easily get bored so she does all kinds of bad things like overspending on things she doesn't need and having sexual affairs that cause her downfall. In the end, Emma commits suicide because she most likely wants to escape public shame.
I do recommend the 2013 movie and I haven't seen the 1949 version. YouTube has the 2013 movie listed and it is free to watch with ads. Also, I want to recommend the book about Madame Bovary which is available online at several places. The book might shed more light on this mysterious story and make it clear I have to read the book myself and am looking forward to it. I believe many people, especially women, can empathize with this book because most young teenage girls have done foolish things in their teenage years.
